As a young girl, one of my favourite weekend past times was
organizing. Spontaneously, I'd clean up my mom's sewing area,
sort drawers, dust and reorganize dressers and the family
displays. Loved it, always.
Alas, not realizing this was anything more than some strange
affliction, I went on to become a physical education teacher
in Hamilton. Married my husband and followed him to Long Island,
New York while he embarked on a hockey career. This involved
many moves into several rental homes over the years. We could
pack and unpack all our belongings in a day. Sometimes the
homes we rented were summer homes on Long Island that were very
small, but we were always organized no matter the space. Who
knew that this was just a benefit to a hockey career?!
Still not realizing my organizing potential, I carried on
in another direction and completed my Masters Degree in Exercise
Physiology and started working in cardiac rehabilitation.
Then, children. First my son with two girls to follow. No
more teaching, no more exercise rehab. The hockey career ends
and my husband and I move back to Ontario and settle in Oakville
to be closer to our families. Suddenly, I'm a full time organizer
but don't know it at this point. My toy room is like a preschool,
(first it was my dining room and then later to a finished
basement), my kitchen functions beautifully and I still have
my passion to sort. My favourite time of year is when the
weather changes and I have to reorganize the closets and drawers
and change the house décor to match the season. Even
preparing the garage for summer or winter is rewarding. Ask
me for a bill, a receipt or an old insurance document and
I'll pull them out of my filing cabinet in less than a minute.
Do I love the process of organizing or is it just the end
result? I think it must be both.
I get great pleasure in helping others tidy up their toy rooms,
help them move in and set up their kitchen or just spontaneously
organize someone's fridge. I am very relaxed while sorting,
classifying, thinking of the game plan and the end result
to a cluttered space. I have a hard time stopping if the job
isn't done. The kids don't really need baths tonight do they?
Suddenly, my plan of going back to part-time teaching is fighting
with this desire to start an organizing business. The idea
comes to me through friends' suggestions and keeps burning
in the back of my brain.
Then it occurs to me. This actually is my passion. Why not
follow through and try this for a living. It still really
is teaching of sorts. It helps individuals, families and I
feel nothing less than pumped from planning, sorting and completing
an organized space.
Call me crazy and you won't be the first. But I don't care.
I think I just may have discovered that this little kid who
would wake up on a Saturday morning, dust, vacuum and then
line up all the books in our den is still really me as an
adult.
Ask me what I would do with some spare time and I might just
tell you, organize my daughter's top junk drawer - and absolutely
love it!
